Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
