Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
