An Powerful Event when Liam Rosenior Breaks Barriers

"He is a quality tactician who understands the game back to front, and that's the most important thing.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

Those are the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea hired RC Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, to be their next head coach after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a multi-club ownership group that also controls the London club.

Statistics show a mere twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," continued Canoville.

"Whenever kids observe someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, a person who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for what's right… it is impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is a massive step for Chelsea, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Do the Statistics Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager back in the nineties and became the top flight's first black manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English manager in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional current top flight boss of colour.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout English football corresponds with a lack of representation in the boardroom.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers come from black heritage.

Yet, research by the equality organization revealed just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching level, based on figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching roles – encompassing head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of talent that exists in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to continue to work hard to break those obstacles down."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become the fourth permanent English managers currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining major divisions in terms of national managers.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight managers in Italy are from Italy, 11 in La Liga in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and 10 in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure every young English coaches from an academy background will be, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's truly motivating to young English coaches in the system to witness an individual land that job with that profile and we hope he does really well."

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., played for clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint peaked with a brief spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He started penning a column for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how vast under-representation results in a failure to understand of players from different cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach utter a homophobic slur. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote an open letter to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "blatant" racism.

Rosenior has since built his reputation in the dugout – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the Premier League's pioneering black manager in Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
